Work package 2: Scientist-led on-farm research

Objectives:
To identify the best combinations of fruit and vegetable species for arbo-market gardens and to document the ecological and economic benefits of agroecological production compared to current practices. To develop simplified methods for monitoring agro-ecological processes for use in farmer-led research.

Methods:
On-station trials of intensified arbo-market gardens with neglected and underutilized crops. Analysis of growth and productivity parameters; monitoring of pests/diseases; analysis of se-lected soil, water and plant quality parameters; record of microclimate and soil moisture by data loggers; assessment of water use efficiency for the vegetable species; mini field trials to develop simple methods for comparing agroecological against current practices regarding irrigation, fertilizer use, and selected pests/diseases in Farmer Field Schools of WP3.
